FROZEN SEMEN

Meet the Pioneers of the Aussie Frozen Equine Semen Industry.

Glenis Dyason and Eil Kingma of International Horse Breeders P/L, began with a dream of bringing frozen equine semen into Australia, way back in 1985. As fate would have it, a catalogue of available European, 'frozen semen' Warmblood stallions 'happened' across their path. It was from this that the, up until then, 'dream' of importing frozen semen from the best overseas studs, was to become a reality.

The German company, who had originally advertised the stallion catalogue, were perhaps a little ahead of their time, as their venture did not get off the ground. This wass not surprising, as undoubtedly, most people back in the 80's believed that frozen AI was not a practical option. However, Glenis and Eil were not deterred.

After four years of working closely with Aqis,( the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service), the protocol for the importation of frozen equine semen into Australia was finally in place. In 1989 Glenis and Eil were given permission for the first shipment of frozen semen to Australia.

After years of negotiation, hard work, endless hours of travel for international study and practical experience, Glenis & Eil's journey had begun and their dream for 'International Horse Breeders' had become a reality.

At that time, there were very few International Stallions that met the Aqis protocol criteria, which ment only one stallion, called 'Wenzel 1', was initially imported. From these humble beginings, that number has grown into a business that now offers over 200 Warmblood Stallions, from the finest European Studs in Germany and Holland.

Glenis and Eil, trading as International Horse Breeders, have established an excellent international reputation in the frozen AI industry.

IHB is unique in the sense that they import semen from a variety of different breeds of horse's, including Warmbloods, Friesians, Standardbreds and now Quarter Horses, only choosing the very best overseas stallions, from their country of origin.

Above is a photo of Eil with a horse we bred a few years ago, and of course his dog Pip, the two are inseparable.

Over the years Glenis and Eil have established a company that can deliver frozen semen anywhere in Australia and New Zealand. They can also assist clients and vets to achieve the very high overall success rate, of a pregnancy around every 2 inseminations. Frozen AI has definitely become a viable and economic option for Australian breeders.

The quality of foals touching ground in this country has increased considerably since the introduction of frozen semen. Some breeders firmly believe that over time, with careful choice of mares, the standard of horses bred in Australia, through frozen AI, will prove themselves as equal to similar bloodlines overseas.

The Advantages of using Frozen Semen

There are many advantages using frozen semen. The semen can last for many years once it is frozen as long as it is properly handled. Semen is kept at a constant -196oC in liquid nitrogen canisters and can be shipped to any part of the country. It can be sent to vet clinics well before mares may need the semen as it just stays in the canister until the mare is ready, thus avoiding any last minute panic. If a vet is not happy with a particular mares' cycle the decision to wait for the next one can easily be made without compromising the quality of the semen. The other main benefit of course is the availability of superior genes from overseas studs.

The selection of mares is very important. Good breeding candidates should only be used - mares in a good age bracket with good breeding histories, or maiden mares under 7 years of age. The selection of a vet is also important. Vets skilled and experienced in using frozen semen should be chosen as it is critical to determine which mares are good frozen semen candidates and which cycles they should be bred on. The timing of insemination is perhaps one of the other crucial aspects of using frozen AI.

In 2005 IHB imported their first frozen Quarter Horse semen from America . In partnership with Gumz Farms in Indiana and Paradise Farms Equine Genetics in Texas, stallions like Chic Please (Smart Chic O Lena x Tenino San), Matt Dillon Dun It (Hollywood Dun It x Kemars Bar Chex), Who Whiz It (Topsail Whiz x Hollywood Jac 86), Mark This Spot (Sargent Freckles x Cactus Banner B), A Major Leaquer (Leaguers Sandman x Rebel Deuce) Zippos After Shock (Zippo Pine Bar x Hotrodders Jet Set) Pure Dynamic (Dynamic Deluxe x Poco Fact) and Mr Notibily Zippo (Zippo Pine Bar x Doc's Malbec) are now available to Australian breeders.

Next year many more stallions will be added to the IHB Quarter Horse stallion list hopefully including Huntin For Chocolate, Color Me Smart, Smart Spook, Lookie A Diamond, Artful Investment, Peppy Dry Bonanza, Footworks Finest, Smart Equalizer, Great Resolve, and Lenas Wright On.

IHB will include more stallions each year as demand and availability grow and these stallions will include Western Pleasure, Reiners, Cutters and Barrel/Bending sires.
